Smartwatch AF Alerts, Subclinical AF, and Prevention: What GPs Need to Know about Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is increasingly encountered in primary care, often presenting as subclinical or asymptomatic disease, or through smartwatch and wearable device alerts. While these technologies have improved the detection of AF, they have also introduced new clinical challenges - particularly in interpreting device-detected arrhythmias, confirming diagnosis, and deciding on appropriate stroke prevention. This session provides a practical, evidence-based framework for general practitioners to navigate these evolving scenarios. Drawing on contemporary international guidelines, as well as emerging data from recent trials of subclinical AF, the talk will address who to screen, how to evaluate smartwatch alerts, and when anticoagulation is appropriate. The session will also highlight the central role of primary care in preventing AF through optimisation of modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors. [CME Points pending clearance.]
